FISI 4048: Introduction to Nuclear Physics

Description

An introduction to Nuclear Physics for Physics majors. Topics include: Elements of Scattering Theory, Rutherford scattering, Energy loss due to ionization, Cerenkov radiation, Photoelectric effect, Thomson, Rayleigh and Compton scattering. Radioactive Decay and methods of measuring decay constants. Detection methods for Nuclear Reactions: Ionization, cloud, bubble and spark chambers. Proportional, Geiger-Müller, scintillation and Cerenkov counters. Particle Accelerators. Nuclear Structure: Liquid-drop and Shell models, spin and magnetic moments. Alpha emission, Gamma emission and Beta decay. The deuteron and nuclear forces. Nuclear reactions: Cross sections, Detailed balance, the Optical model.
